Packing, Cost and Time Saving Tips from Glen Ellyn Moving

  1. Contact your homeowner's insurance company. Your policy may cover your household goods in transport.

  2. All boxes must have tops and be taped closed. Do not just fold the flaps. It is suggested to tape the bottom for extra security.

  3. Organization is key! Label boxes by number and then give each room of your new home a number. At your new home, write the numbers on sheets of paper and tape them to the doors of the rooms. This eliminates confusion for both you and the movers. Remember time is money! Also, label if items are fragile.

  4. If you are moving from an apartment, let the manager know when you are moving and reserve an elevator.

  5. Clothing can stay in single, double dressers, and nightstands; however, armoires and triple dressers need to be emptied. Two-drawer file cabinets can be moved with papers in drawers. Four-drawer file cabinets must have the top two drawers emptied; bottom two drawers can remain full.

  6. Pack a specific dresser with the essentials you will need for the first day at your new home. Have our movers load the dresser and/or box on the truck last so it will be unloaded first.

  7. Have all electronic equipment disconnected from each other. These items require packing.

  8. Have appliances disconnected and all cords unplugged and wrapped. A third party service can disconnect gas lines and refrigerators with water lines, dissassemble/prepare for move grandfather clocks, ceiling fans, pool tables, weight sets or remove window air conditioning units. Glen Ellyn Mayflower works with a third party service if you need assistance.

  9. Glen Ellyn Mayflower provides free wardrobe cartons, although you are responsible for the pack and unpack of the wardrobe cartons unless the mover is paid for this service. Putting your shoes in the bottom of the wardrobe cartons means less boxes to pack and makes it easier to unpack into your closet.

  10. Know where your furniture is going to be located in your new home...time is money! Also, this saves having to move it again later.

  11. Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in larger boxes. Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box.

  12. Fill your trashcans with large garden tools. Utilize every space when packing hampers, plastic containers, etc.

  13. If you are packing yourself, utilize your blankets, sheets and towels for fragile items.

  14. Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in the protective wrapping for the move.

  15. Pack all medicines in a leak proof container.

  16. Carry all valuables with you.

  17. If there is extra room on the truck, plants can be transported locally. Although, Glen Ellyn Mayflower is not liable.

  18. Even though we offer moving supplies, you may want to begin accumulating boxes, tape, labels, markers, bubble wrap and/or newspaper.

  19. If you have the availability to bring items to your new home, we suggest taking jewelry, medications, personal paperwork, lamps, lampshades, pictures, mirrors and/or glass.

  20. Check your home before you and the movers leave to make sure everything is loaded. Check in closets, attic, basement, etc.

  21. Rule of thumb – if you haven't used it in a year, you probably never will. This is s great time to consolidate and purge!
