NOVI, Mich. – Nearly two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, volunteers like Kirk Hensler, general manager of Premier Relocations, LLC, an agent of Mayflower Transit, still find much work to be done.
Premier helped sponsor a group of 23 high school students and five adults, including Hensler and his family, to go help with clean-up efforts at a church daycare and three homes. Hensler said he was surprised by some of what he saw.
"When we walked into the first house, there was a calendar in the kitchen that was still on August 2005,” Hensler said. “It was a real eye-opener to think that the house had been sitting like that for more than a year.”
The group left Detroit on April 8 and stayed for a week. One of their major projects was at the First United Methodist Church on Canal Street in New Orleans, where they tore apart and rebuilt a playground for the daycare that once occupied the building. The church had had four feet of standing water in it for more than two months, which caused much of the damage.
Their housing project involved gutting the homes of three families. All three homes were destroyed by water damage and everything from furniture to drywall and wooden molding had to be removed.
