AMERICANS ON THE MOVE: MAYFLOWER TRANSIT STUDY
REVEALS RISING, FALLING POPULARITY OF RELOCATION DESTINATIONS

ST. LOUIS, September 16, 2009 – Where are people moving and why? These are the questions many state leaders are asking as they try to stabilize and grow their economies in the midst of a recession. New data from the 2009 Mayflower Customer Relocation Study reveals states that experienced either a significant increase or a drastic decline in relocations over the past year. The annual study is released by Mayflower Transit, the most recognized name in moving for more than 80 years.

Top five destinations increasing in popularity: Who’s moving in?

Several states experienced big increases in the percentage of inbound moves from 2008 to 2009. The top five states that experienced the highest year-to-year growth were:

  • West Virginia – 10.8 percentage points (with 65.1 percent of all moves being inbound in 2009 compared to 54.3 percent in 2008);
  • Rhode Island – 8.8 percentage points (52.9 percent inbound);
  • North Dakota – 8.5 percentage points (49.3 percent inbound);
  • Kansas – 8.4 percentage points (57.7 percent inbound); and
  • Montana – 7.6 percentage points (62.5 percent inbound).

Top five destinations decreasing in popularity: Who’s moving out?

Conversely, several states saw more people leaving compared to the previous year. Based on the percentage change in outbound moves, the following five states saw the biggest increase in people leaving:

  • Minnesota – 8.3 percentage points (with 56.3 percent of moves being outbound in 2009 compared to 48 percent in 2008);
  • Washington – 7.8 percentage points (53.9 percent outbound);
  • Utah – 6.9 percentage points (52.5 percent outbound);
  • Mississippi – 6.5 percentage points (56.9 percent outbound); and
  • Nevada – 6.2 percentage points (44.5 percent outbound).

Top reasons for moving

In 2009, only 20.1 percent of customer moves were for personal or health-related reasons, according to Mayflower’s Customer Service Survey. The remaining moves were job-related, including 37 percent for new jobs, 16.3 percent due to company transfers and 26.6 percent attributed to retirements.

Fewer than half of all respondents (43.8 percent) indicated that they have only moved once in the past five years. Approximately, 28.8 percent have moved twice and 27.4 percent have moved three or more times in the past five years.
