    What Are the Benefits of Living Simply?

    Minimalist Mindset

    Millennials are living with a minimalist mindset. As a generation, they aim to live simply or with as few possessions as possible. They tend to keep things they think they may need in the future and find it hard to let go of items they purchased with their own money. But, the consensus is less is more.

    According to Mayflower, millennials (25%) are significantly more likely than Generation X (14%) and baby boomers (9%) to say they always live minimally.

    To Keep or Not to Keep

    Millennials stand out from their older counterparts when it comes to storing family heirlooms. While Generation X and baby boomers are more likely to put heirlooms in safe-keeping to pass along to their children or grandchildren, millennials often repurpose heirlooms into something new. While the functionality of these sentimental items is important, millennials are much less likely to display an heirloom in their living space.

    Can Living Simply Decrease Stress?

    Millennials also enjoy a stress-free living environment. They are seven times more likely than baby boomers to declutter every January to start off the year relaxed and refreshed. This modern perspective on purging stems from the millennial trend of valuing experiences over things. The idea of having many belongings they are responsible for makes them feel tied-down and restricted. In fact, 72 percent of millennials agree that living simply makes them feel more in control.

    Can Living Simply Result in Having More Time?

    Millennials enjoy coming home to a clutter-free space after work, allowing them to focus their time on what matters most to them. While they enjoy a visit to their parents’ and grandparents’ often larger homes, millennials still prefer to live simply.
