Moving with Pets Checklist

Apr 15, 2019 -

Preparing, moving and settling into a new home can be stressful. Adding a pet to the mix can just add to the stress! Here are a handful of important, but often forgotten tasks to ensure a seamless transition while moving with a pet:

Housing Regulations

Double check  your pet meets local weight and breed regulations. Some communities don’t allow specific breeds or pets of a certain size. Make sure to do your research prior to choosing a new home. You can check out this guide, which outlines state-by-state regulations.

Pet Records

If you are getting a new vet closer to home, make sure you collect all your pet’s records for an easier transfer.

Packing for Your Pet

Pack your pet’s food bowls, medications and snacks separately for quick and easy access during the move process. It’s easy to misplace items and boxes in the days during and after a move. Your pet’s necessities should be readily available when you arrive at your new home.

Microchip

Update your pet’s microchip or collar tag to your new address.

Research Pet-Friendly Areas

Find pet-friendly spaces in the neighborhood. A dog park or walking path can make them feel at home instantly.

Have Your Pet Meet Their New Home

Once you’re settled in, introduce your pet to their new surroundings. Showing them where things are will make them feel more at home and acclimate quicker.

Additional Dog Tips

  • Consider your dog’s safety in your new home: will you need a fence or a doggie door?
  • Remember to take your dog for a walk. Unpacking can be a bit hectic. Don’t forget your pet in the process.  Your pup might need to go outside and do their business.
  • Until your dog is acquainted with their new neighborhood, don’t let them roam or walk off-leash – they may get lost or run into friends they haven’t met yet.

Additional Cat Tips

  • Make sure the litter box is set up in its permanent location to avoid confusion for your cat.
  • On moving day, keep an eye on your cat. While moving boxes in and out of the house, they may try to sneak out and explore the new neighborhood.
