Reversible Decorative Updates That are Trending Right Now

Get A Quote

They say nothing lasts forever, especially in the way of décor. Trends come and go, and the hot look one year may look tired and passe by the next. Even if you’ve finally found your forever home, you might not want to make a permanent commitment to a particular look right away. And if you’re a renter, any permanent changes could very well cause you to lose your security deposit.

For this article, we won’t focus too heavily on accessorizing a room, since items like pillows and curtains are always easily changed out. Instead, let’s look at temporary solutions for transforming the major features of your space that can be easily removed with minimal time and effort.

First, Think Sustainably

Though technically it doesn’t fall strictly under the category of “reversible,” the trend toward inexpensive assemble-them-yourself furnishings is definitely on the wane. So, let’s put sustainability —and sustainable décor—into the mix, too. After all, they “reverse” the notion that everything needs to be brand new.

Increasingly, people are opting for eco-friendly decor, such as furniture made from reclaimed wood and recycled fabrics. There’s also a trending movement towards buying top quality furniture from secondhand boutiques, auctions and estate sales, and even thrift stores. Choices like these will reduce your carbon footprint and add character and visual interest.

Temporary Wallpaper

Temporary wallpaper is gaining traction as a reversible decorative solution. Peel-and-stick, removable wallpaper lets you change up your space without damaging your walls or dealing with messy glue. If or when you move again – or you’re just tired of it – simply peel it off.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper makes it easy to test out the latest trends without a long-term commitment. Switch out wallpaper for each season, reposition it when you rearrange the room, or remove it altogether when you’re ready for a new look.

Paint

When it comes to brightening up a room, paint is a perennial game-changer. If you’ve been scouring home design websites and social channels like Instagram, you’re probably noticing that cool grays and whites are giving way to warmer color palletes, often featuring earth tones and other natural colors.

That said, if you’re stuck with a room or two of “renter’s white,” consider removable wall paint from brands like Chalk Ink and IdeaPaint. Just paint it on a wall and you’ll have an erasable surface very much like a chalkboard or a whiteboard. Then you can simply wipe any designs or drawings you’ve made with water and a damp cloth. If you’re artistically inclined, you’re in for a lot of fun experimentation.

Removable Wall Tiles and Decals

Removable wall tiles are an easy, budget-friendly way to transform your space without a permanent commitment. Self-adhesive peel and stick tiles are simple to work with. Just peel off the backing, stick them on your wall, then peel them off again when you’re ready for a new look. Check out brands like Smart Tiles and FloorPops for some thought-starters.

Removable wall decals are a good choice if you want a spot of color without a lot of fuss or drawing skills. Just stick them on the wall, keep rearranging them until you like the effect and you’re done. Check out sites such as Walls Republic or Wallies for ideas and inspiration.

Peel-and-Stick Flooring

Even floors can be changed up quickly thanks to today’s peel-and-stick flooring. It’s easy to install, relatively inexpensive and can be added and removed without damaging the surface below (which is perfect for rentals). There are even waterproof options for bathrooms, kitchens, basements and laundry rooms. When it’s time for another update, simply peel up the tiles or planks and you’re done

One caveat: If the existing floor is uneven or the boards or tiles are loose, you’ll need to move forward carefully. Do your absolute best to ensure you’re sticking your temporary “quick fix” to a clean, smooth surface.

Reversible Furniture Covers

Even grandma’s slipcovers are making a comeback. Full sofa or chair slipcovers make it easy to change the color scheme or style of your space without buying a lot of new stuff. Reversible slipcovers are even better since they will give you two options for a little more than the price of one. Look for slipcovers that have elastic or tie closures to keep them securely in place and preferably machine washable. And while florals and busy plaids are definitely “out,” many of the hottest style choices incorporate bold colors, including one of 2023’s hottest: Peacock Blue.
