Mayflower Reveals Americans Are Prioritizing Health and Safety Over Outdated Traditions When Planning a Move

New data shows survey respondents believe hiring movers is the right choice when moving long distance (61%), accumulating valuables and heavy belongings (49%) and reaching a certain age (44%).

ST. LOUIS – Oct. 13, 2025 – The days of paying off friends with pizza and beer on moving day are coming to an end. According to the Mayflower 2025 “Finding Home” study, Americans are increasingly prioritizing health and safety while protecting their relationships by turning to professional movers when planning to relocate.

The study found that 61% of respondents believe hiring professional movers is the right choice for long-distance moves. Nearly half (49%) cited the challenge of transporting valuables and heavy belongings, while 44% pointed to reaching a certain age as a deciding factor. Among those uncomfortable asking friends or family for help, about one in four worried their helpers might get injured (24%), and 22% felt they should be old enough to manage the move on their own.

Moving with professionals not only preserves relationships but also provides peace of mind. Forty-one percent (41%) of respondents cite time-savings and other convenience factors as their primary reason for hiring movers, valuing completion in hours rather than days.

“As our latest survey shows, people are prioritizing health, safety and peace of mind when it comes to moving — especially during life’s bigger milestones,” said Eily Cummings, vice president of corporate communications at Mayflower. “Professional movers have become trusted partners in helping families and individuals navigate these transitions with confidence. We’re proud to support them not only with the logistics, but also by celebrating the exciting journey of settling into a new home and becoming part of a new community.”

The survey also found:

  • 47% of survey respondents agreed health or mobility changes would make them most likely to consider a full-service move and 43% would mostly likely consider professional movers when moving cross-country for a new job or significant career change
  • 32% say they would hire professionals for their skill in handling bulky items or navigating tricky spaces
  • Nearly one in four (24%) movers worry about injuries to loved ones during a move
  • Most respondents may consider using a full-service mover if they were to move again (64%)

Survey Background and Methodology

This research was conducted by a third-party partner using a two-phased approach, beginning with qualitative research to inform the design of the subsequent quantitative phase. The findings presented in this report are based on the quantitative phase, which consisted of an online survey administered via the Qualtrics platform. Survey interviews were completed in June 2025, utilizing a national random sample of 1,000 adults age 18 and older. Respondents were recruited from online research panels, with quotas set to ensure the sample reflects national proportions for gender, age and time zone. All participants reported having completed at least one non-full-service (DIY) move as an adult, while 631 respondents also indicated experience with a full-service move.
